Year 3
Spring Term
Hello and welcome to Spring Term 2026,
It was lovely to welcome the children back to school after the Christmas and New Year holiday. As ever we shall be having a busy term with lots to do.
PE days will be on a Thursday, starting with Gymnastics and children will need a plain white t-shirt and black shorts.
What will we do doing this term?
In English we shall begin by reading Ted Hughes classic book, The Iron Man before writing our own narrative based on the story. We shall then write an information text about how bees make honey, practicing our skills in setting out reports using headings and sub-headings. Finally, we shall look at a diary entry based on the story of the Journey.
Mr Fisher will be reading the stories of Anansi and the Antelope Baby and The Sheep Pig with the children.
Please remember children should be reading at least 3 times a week at home so that they can take their Accelerated Reader quizzes each week.
In Maths we will be looking at multiplication and division, beginning with the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables. The children will also have access to Times Table Rockstars to help them remember the tables but regular practice at home will help. They will also look at multiplying and dividing two and three digit numbers. We shall also begin to loom at fractions, both of a whole and of numbers.
In History we shall consider why the Romans invaded Britain. We are lucky to have a wealth of Roman resources here in Carlisle and will look to visit the Roman Bath house dig at the Cricket Club when it begins. We shall look at what happened when the Romans invaded Britain and how the locals reacted, to what life was like in Roman Britain before considering the legacy of what the Romans did to this day.
In Geography we shall look at the Antarctic, beginning by looking at climate and how there are different climate zones. We shall find out where the Antarctic is and even plot Shackleton's journey before learning why no one lives in the Antarctic permanently.
In Science we shall continue our work on Animals including humans and will consider our muscles before thinking about nutrition and how we can stay healthy. Then we shall look at forces and consider the work of Scientists such as Sir Isaac Newton and how his work helps us understand gravity and movement to this day.
Mr Tugwell will be teaching us to play the recorder this term and we shall be showcasing our skills in the Spring Music Concert. He is also teaching us about rhythm and simple music annotation.
In Art we shall consider negative areas and how to represent them in a sculpture. In DT we shall continue to make our cushions before learning about castles, their main features and making a castle sculpture.
In computing we will be coding a sequence using sound with our Micro:Bits before organising data in a database using both physical and iPad based resources.
